The objective of this course is to introduce the basic principles of sailing to beginners. Getting into the life aboard, personal safety, control of helm under sail and engine as well as seamanship to bring you to a level where you are a confident crewmember of a cruising yacht.
Course Content
1- Nautical Terms to use and understand any orders given at sea.
• Parts of a sailing yacht
• Parts of the sails and rigging
2- Rope work
• Different knots and how to use them correctly. Handling ropes, warps, securing lines and coiling.
3-Sailing Theory and handling sails
• Basic sailing theory, setting sails, hoisting, reefing, use of sheets, halyards and winches
4- Controls of Helm
• Point of sail, basic sailing trim
• Tacking and Gybing
• Steering a compass course under sail and engine
5- Man Over Board
• Applicable procedures for recovery of a person over board, under sail and engine
6- Personal Safety, Safety Items
• Compliance with safety rules, using life jackets, harness and safety items
7- VHF
• VHF, Phonetics, correct radio protocol
8- Fire Safety and Fire Fighting
• Precautions, preventing and basic techniques in case of fire.
9- Meteorology
• Beaufort scale, forecasts and weather systems
10- Anchoring
• Principals of anchoring and anchor types.
11- Collision Regulations and Rules of the Road
• Regulations and rules at sea
12- Seasickness
• Prevention and treatment
13- Sailing and life aboard
• Crew duties and responsibilities for cruising both on deck and below
• Handling provisions
